Sunday Prep

The plan a real trading desk makes for the week ahead. Free, in your inbox every Sunday at 6:30 PM ET.

  • If/then, never predictions. Every idea has two branches.
  • Where it's wrong, every time. In the same breath as the idea.
  • A routine you learn. Then run it without us.

SPY, daily, six months to Oct 30. Last week's high 773.36, weekly pivot 759.81 (the average of last week's high, low and close), Friday's low 750.36 on top of the September and August lows.

Hey all. Clocks went back an hour this morning, so if your alarm felt generous, enjoy it. This week won't be. Apple and Palantir report Monday night, the country votes in the midterms on Tuesday, AMD reports Tuesday night, Qualcomm, Arm and AppLovin on Wednesday night, and the October jobs report lands Friday morning. And all of that arrives on the back of a Friday where QQQ fell 3.5% in one session.

Every level the issue printed, reached or not. Reached means the regular session, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, traded at the level; gapped through means it opened past it.

Same five steps, every Sunday

The order matters. You look at the calendar before a chart, and at the market before a stock.

  1. 1

    The calendar

Fed days, data mornings and the earnings that can gap a stock overnight. Where the landmines are, before you take a step.

  2. 2

    The indexes

Where SPY and QQQ sit against their moving averages, and the few levels where the market changes character.

  3. 3

    The money

Eleven sectors ranked over the month. What the market is actually rewarding, not what TV is talking about.

  4. 4

    Earnings

Which reports deserve a plan, which ones to ignore, and how to handle the morning after.

  5. 5

    Four lists

Strong, oversold, weak, overbought, scanned from about 700 liquid stocks. Two names each, with an if/then and where it's wrong.

What it isn't

It isn't a stock-picking service, and it doesn't tell you what the market will do. Nobody knows that, and we don't need to. Each idea is a plan with two branches: if price does this, here's what we do; if it does that instead, here's where we're wrong and out. You pull up the charts and make your own call.
